HIV Education for Inmates: Uncovering Strategies for Program Selection

NANCY LYNNE HOGAN

Arizona State University

Recently, an expanded mission has emerged for correctional policy to focus on HIV/AIDS education interventions which not only benefit the institution, but also benefit society as a whole. It is hoped that by targeting the hard-to-reach populations found incarcerated and promoting behavior change, transmission may be prevented. This article focuses on identifying the required ingredients to uncover an effective educational strategy. These include: looking at educational paradigms, providing an in-depth understanding of different forms of risky behavior, uncovering everyday interpretation within racial, cultural, and gender frameworks, and choosing the most effective communication modes for the inmate population.
